Tech | 5 (free) Must Have android apps for geeks

@ECMAG_Dave February 23, 2013 7

Houston is without a doubt a major center for technological innovation in every imaginable field from medicine to energy to aerospace and therefore it’s not surprising that H town has it’s fair share of geeks to make sure all the lights keep blinking and none of the packets get lost.

Here are a few of my top apps that I couldn’t live without on a daily basis. (much like my coffee)

1. Adblock Plusad-block-plus-android

AdBlock Plus does just what it says, blocks annoying ads on your mobile device, works great in most cases from my experience, although depending on your device your mileage may vary.

2. Fing – Network Tools fing-network-toolsFing is a great little app if you ever need to see what exactly is going on with your local network, it also integrates with other third party apps such as ssh or samba file sharing clients for example.  All in all a definite must have if you spend any time whatsoever working on a network from your phone.

3. SpeedTest.Net speedtestEver wonder if your network is actually as fast as your carrier or service provider says it is?  Now you can know for sure, be wary though, it does use quite a bit of data if run regularly.

4. Connectbot connectbotProbably one of the most frequently used tools on my phone or tablet.  This little baby can allow you the required emergency access to recover from a disaster situation from literally anywhere with a cell signal or wifi, this little ssh client may be one of the most useful android applications developed as to date for administrators or linux users in general.  Not for the faint of heart!

5. ADW.Launcher adwlauncherHands down the quickest, cleanest and most customizable launcher available.  a 100% must have if you want to customize the look and feel of your Android device overall.  In addition to being extremely customizable it’s also very lightweight and efficient.

      Alas, I as well have fallen victim to the awesome games made by Adult Swim. But I prefer Monsters Ate My Condo!

    Didn’t google recently take action to prevent ad blocking on the android platform?

      Good call, I do recall reading something along those lines a few weeks ago, but as of this time my android devices all block ads still, although changes may have been made to make initial configuration more difficult.
